Young people are the undeniable backbone and promise of any nation. Considering the political conditions today, their active engagement is a crucial ingredient for democratic growth and the building of inclusive, future-focused policies. Since political frameworks profoundly determine our living conditions, political awareness, knowledge, and participation are non-negotiable. Yet, despite their immense potential, many youths remain disengaged or skeptical about the political process.
Whenever young people participate in politics, they don't just add a voice; they introduce new, often disruptive, ideas, question stagnant systems, and actively push for crucial change in areas like education, jobs, climate action, and social justice. Their participation is the only way to ensure political decisions account for future generations, not just present stakeholders.
With youth's participation being so important, there are several factors which discourage young people from participating in politics. Feelings of disappointment from corruption, lack of transparency and unfulfilled promises from the leaders make many young people feel discouraged. Others still lack political education or believe their voices do not count. In some regions, restrictive laws, economic challenges or social pressures also discourage youth engagement.
It is essential for governments, political entities, and civil society to actively create designated spaces for youth voices. This can involve establishing official Youth Councils, incorporating their perspectives into policy development, and ensuring their views are genuinely valued, rather than simply acknowledged.
Education can play a vital role in creating politically aware citizens. Schools and universities must focus on fostering critical thinking and civic responsibility through discussions and debates. Technology and social media have also transformed youth participation in providing a platform to organize movements, share opinions, and hold leaders accountable.
For democracy to genuinely flourish, youth participation needs to transition decisively from the periphery to the center. The future stability and prosperity of every nation hinge on how effectively it utilizes the energy, creativity, and determination of its youth. Engaging in politics is not merely a privilege; it is a societal obligation that enhances the justice, inclusiveness, and dynamic readiness of our nations for the challenges that lie ahead.
